The first episode of the K-drama Love next door takes viewers to the fictional district of Hyereung-dong in Seoul, where friends Na Mi-sook and Seo Hye-sook show off the successes of their successful children on a hike. While Hye-sook’s son Choi Seung-hyo is a star architect, Mi-sook’s daughter Bae Seok-ryu, who will soon marry the son of a millionaire, earns a handsome salary as an employee of a renowned company in the USA.

The scene then shifts to Seung-hyo receiving an award as co-founder of his architecture firm Atelier In. Meanwhile, Bae Seok-ryu suddenly returns to Korea and is picked up from the airport by her childhood best friend Jung Mo-eun. On the way back, Seok-ryu gets hungry and the two head to a tteokbokki shop near their neighborhood. Soon, Seok-ryu’s brother comes to the scene to get some takeout and Seok-ryu starts hiding from him, making Mo-eun realize that there is something suspicious about her sudden arrival.

Elsewhere, Seung-hyo visits his new office building and finds Seok-ryu there. The latter evades all his questions, but hides in a large moving box when her mother and friends return from their hike, making Seok-ryu suspicious. When her parents leave, Seok-ryu visits Seung-hyo’s office, but still refuses to answer his questions.

Later, the duo head home, with Seok-ryu putting on multiple layers of clothing to protect herself from her mother’s beatings. The episode ends with Seok-ryu running away with Seung-hyo after she reveals to her mother that she not only quit her job but also broke off her engagement in the US. However, Seung-hyo convinces her to return home, only to be beaten up by her mother for her careless decisions.

In episode two, Seok-ryu feels lonely as her mother refuses to talk to her. She is also strongly advised not to attend the opening party of Seung-hyo’s new office. However, Seok-ryu notices that her mother forgot her favorite brooch and decides to stop by the party to bring her the same. Meanwhile, Mi-sook becomes a laughing stock because of her daughter’s comeback and the canceled engagement. To save the situation, Mi-sook ends up lying to her and saying that Seok-ryu will return to the US as she has been discovered by another big company.

Back home, Seok-ryu and Mi-sook get into a heated argument when the latter tries to force Seok-ryu to return to the US. Seok-ryu realizes that her mother is ashamed of her and leaves the house. She goes to a nearby park, where she meets Seung-hyo and cries her heart out.

The episode ends with Mi-sook giving Seok-ryu her old room back and hinting that she can stay as long as she wants. Seok-ryu also learns that it was Seung-hyo who remodeled her room. He even recreated the glow-in-the-dark stars from her childhood bedroom for her ceiling. When Seok-ryu goes to the window, she sees Seung-hyo looking at her. He informs her that he has returned to his old room in his house, which is right across from hers.
