Mariah Carey’s sister and mother died on the same day

Mariah Carey’s mother Patricia and sister Alison both died on the same day this weekend.

The singer, who grew up on Long Island, said in a statement to TMZ and People Magazine: “I am heartbroken to have lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, my sister lost her life the same day in a tragic turn of events.” She added: “I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away. I am grateful for everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Patricia was 87 years old and Alison was 63. No cause of death was given for either woman.

In her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” the singer described a complex relationship with her mother, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and voice teacher. Carey called it a “delicate rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment.”

Still, they managed to maintain a relationship over the years. According to People, they appeared together on the ABC special “Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You” in 2010 and sang a duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus.”

Carey also dedicated part of her memoir to her mother. “And to Pat, my mother, who, despite everything, I think actually did the best she could,” she wrote. “I will always love you as well as I can.”

Patricia was married to Alfred Carey from 1960 to 1973. In addition to Alison and Mariah, they also had a son, Morgan. (Alfred died in 2002.)

Carey’s relationship with her sister was more strained. In February 2021, Alison sued the singer for $1.25 million over the way she was portrayed in the memoir. Alison claimed her younger sister intentionally inflicted “emotional distress” and “public humiliation” on her.
