One of The Last of Us‘s newest stars can’t understand why some fans are disparaging Season 2 of the hit video game adaptation long before its release. Isabela Merced admits criticism of the upcoming season “upsets” her while questioning the response to it.

In conversation with Josh Horowitz about the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Merced talked about the negativity surrounding The Last of Us Season 2, including criticism of her casting as Dina, a colleague of Ellie (Bella Ramsey). Merced admitted the backlash “confuses” her, claiming she’s glad she’s not on X (formerly Twitter) to respond to some of the vitriol she’s seen. “What confuses me is that the showrunner and the creator of the video game are working together to make this.” So if you like what the guy did and he does more of it, why are you mad? You know what I mean? I don’t know, I have too many opinions to be on Twitter, it really pisses me offbecause I see this stuff and it makes me want to do it like Cardi B,” Merced said.

Despite winning an Emmy and having one of the best debut seasons of an HBO original series, The Last of Us There were some critics who considered some changes from the source material in Season 1. As Season 2 began, the collective groans grew louder, and there was opposition to some of the casting decisions. Merced has been criticized since she was cast as Dina in January, mainly because she is of a different ethnicity (Peruvian-American) than the character in the games (Jewish/Israeli). In addition, fellow newcomer Kaitlyn Dever, who portrays the controversial Abby Anderson, has also been criticized, with fans complaining that she has a different body type than the character.
