Caregivers asked to stop using several brands of baby loungers after five infants died: What you should know

Parents and carers are asked to Avoid using multiple brands of baby beds after five infants died.

The US consumer protection agency CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) warns against using loungers of the brands Mamibaby, Yoocaa, DHZJM, Cosy Nation and Hyhuudth, as these create an unsafe sleeping environment and pose a risk of suffocation, entrapment or falls for infants.

What we know about the deaths

The CPSC is aware of five deaths believed to be linked to Mamibaby, Yoocaa and DHZJM baby loungers. Here is what the CPSC reported:

  • Mommybaby: Two infants, aged ten days and five months, died in Mamibaby brand baby beds in 2020 and 2021 when the products were used for co-sleeping in bed.

  • Yoocaa: Two infant deaths are reportedly linked to Yoocaa-branded baby loungers, including one in 2021 in which a three-month-old child was reportedly placed in a Yoocaa-branded baby lounger on top of an adult bed and then found fatally trapped between the adult bed and the bedroom wall. The other death occurred in 2022 in which a four-month-old child was reportedly found unconscious after being placed in a Yoocaa-branded baby lounger with a blanket to sleep.

  • DHZJM: The fifth infant death in 2020 occurred in a DHZJM brand baby bassinet. It involved a four-month-old child who was reportedly found unconscious and face down on a blanket placed on the bassinet. This death was previously reported in a CPSC alert dated June 6, 2024.

Deck chairs violate federal safety regulations

For this reason, baby beds from Mamibaby, Yoocaa, DHZJM and Cosy Nation violate federal safety regulations:

  • The sides are too low to hold the child.

  • The sleeping pad is too thick, there is a risk of suffocation.

  • A small child could fall out of a closed opening at the foot end of the bed or become trapped.

According to the CPSC, none of the five brands of baby loungers have a stand, so using them on elevated surfaces poses a risk of falls.

Manufacturer rejects recall

Ningbo Tree Nest Children Products CO., Ltd. of China has been identified as the manufacturer of the Yoocaa, DHZJM and Hyhuudth lounge chairs. The company is also believed to be the manufacturer of the Mamibaby and Cosy Nation brand lounge chairs sold on Amazon.com.

“It’s appalling to consider that without a manufacturer recall, consumers could see these loungers again under new brand names and buy them thinking they’re safe,” said Oriene Shin, general counsel at Consumer Reports. “Ningbo Tree Nest failed to do the right thing by its customers and put countless babies at risk of serious injury or death. The refusal to issue a recall is appalling. Now it’s up to Amazon and Walmart to act forcefully to remove these illegal loungers from their platforms, stop any potential future sales of these loungers, and warn consumers of the serious risk they pose.”

According to the CPSC, the manufacturer has not agreed to a recall of the following loungers:

  • Mamibaby brand baby loungers will be sold online at Walmart.com for approximately $43 from March 2023 to December 2023.
  • Mamibaby and Cosy Nation branded baby loungers will be sold online at Amazon.com from June 2023 to June 2024 for $31 to $50.
  • Yoocaa brand baby loungers were sold online on Amazon.com from January 2021 to June 2023 for $20 to $87.
  • DHZJM brand loungers were sold online at Amazon.com from April 2019 to November 2023 for $17 to $49.
  • Hyhuudth brand baby loungers will be sold online at Amazon.com from May 2023 to August 2024 for $39 to $46.

Some third-party retailers through which the loungers were sold have agreed to recall the loungers.

How to recognize the dangerous deck chairs

Most loungers have labels sewn into the lounger covers. One of the things written on the labels is “SLEEP SET.”

Most of the Mamibaby, DHZJM, Cosy Nation and Hyhuudth baby loungers evaluated by the CPSC also included a sewn-on label with the respective brand name on the outside of the lounger cover.

The baby loungers from DHZJM and Hyhuudth also have a manufacturer’s label sewn into the lounger cover with the inscription “Ningbo Tree Nest Children Products CO. ltd.”

Yoocaa baby loungers do not have any brand names on the product, but the manufacturer “Ningbo Tree Nest Children Products Ltd” is stated on the packaging.

What to do

The CPSC is asking all owners of these loungers to stop using them and destroy them immediately. Do not sell or give away the dangerous baby loungers.

The CPSC is urging people to stop using all baby loungers made by Mamibaby, Yoocaa, DHZJM, Cosy Nation and Hyhuudth.

How to destroy the lounger:

  • Remove the fabric cover

  • Cutting the lounger cover and inner pad

  • Dispose of the parts in household waste or in textile recycling

Tips for safe sleep

The CPSC offers the following tips for safe sleep:

  • The best place for a baby to sleep is on a firm, flat surface in a crib, bassinet or playpen.

  • Use only fitted sheets and never place blankets, pillows, padded bed bumpers or other items in a toddler’s sleeping environment.

  • Infants should always sleep on their backs. Infants who fall asleep in a slanting or upright position should be moved to a safe sleep environment with a firm, flat surface such as a crib, bassinet or playpen.

How to report injuries

Report all incidents of injury or product defects to the CPSC at SaferProducts.gov.
