A 17-year-old girl from the Gila River Indian Community was found in Iowa after missing for 10 days, and the FBI arrested a man she met there, Gila River police said.

On August 6, authorities reported the girl missing after she disappeared from Bapchule, a village south of Chandler.

According to a Gila River Police press release, the girl allegedly purchased a ticket from Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport to Des Moines, Iowa, to meet a man she had spoken to online.

According to a press release, the Gila River Police Department and FBI worked with the Iowa Bureau of Indian Affairs to identify the juveniles because there were “serious concerns” about their safety and welfare.

The FBI arrested 20-year-old Malachi Reed on Friday afternoon in Ankney, Iowa. His charges are still pending, the press release said.

“The rapid response and coordinated efforts of all agencies involved reinforce our shared commitment to combating the nationwide epidemic of missing and murdered Native people,” said Jesse Crabtree, Chief of the Gila River Police Department.
