A bistro meal with a view

The SixSeven restaurant in the Galeries Lafayette building on Boulevard Royal towers above most of the capital’s buildings and offers a spectacular panorama of the city.

Those who sit down for a gourmet bistro meal or a cocktail can enjoy the restaurant’s large terrace, which Luxembourg Times Readers voted the restaurant’s terrace the best restaurant terrace in the recent Terrace of the Year competition. But not many people know that you don’t need to reserve a table to enjoy the view. A path that goes around the sixth floor is open to the public between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

When visitors exit the elevator on the sixth floor, they are immediately drawn to the restaurant’s island bar and 360-degree views of downtown and beyond.

“We wanted the view to immediately catch people’s eye because it is unique and quiet despite being located in the middle of the city center,” says Marie Rohrmann, the restaurant’s strategic project manager.

The sixth floor opens on one side to a large terrace decorated with plants, lamps and illuminated flowers, offering views of Notre Dame Cathedral, the Old Town, the Pétrusse Valley and the Adolphe Bridge. There is an outdoor lounge area and enough space for entertaining.

On the seventh floor there are more tables indoors and a long balcony with the same view.

From the tables at opposite ends of the restaurant on both floors, you can enjoy views of the Kirchberg district, the casemates, streets and beyond through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

“At dusk, the view is magical and the city lights create a glittering backdrop. Many historic monuments and buildings are often illuminated at night,” Rohrmann added.

The marble-effect tables with gold edging and the dark blue and black carpets and walls create an understated interior where the view takes centre stage.

The kitchen staff is spread over two floors – those who prepare the main dishes are on the sixth floor and the pastry chefs on the upper floor. The menu changes according to the season and the sommelier offers more than 450 wines, mainly from Europe, while the bartenders mix classic and creative cocktails.
