“I thought she might die” – Woller Akos on Vinesh Phogat’s worrying condition before failing to weigh in at the Paris Olympics

Woller Akos, Vinesh Phogat’s long-time personal trainer, revealed some heartbreaking details about the wrestler’s failed weight loss that led to her disqualification from the Paris Olympics.

A Facebook post in Hungarian, which has since been deleted, states Indian Express As reported, Akos stressed Vinesh’s determination to win her first Olympic medal.

“After the semifinals, she was 2.7 kg overweight. We trained for an hour and twenty minutes, but there was still 1.5 kg left. Later, after 50 minutes in the sauna, there was not a drop of sweat left. She had no choice and from midnight to 5:30 in the morning she trained on various cardio machines and wrestling exercises, about 45 minutes at a time, with two to three minutes breaks. Then she started again. She collapsed, but somehow we managed to get her up and she spent an hour in the sauna. I am not intentionally writing dramatic details, but I just remember thinking she might die,” Akos wrote.

The Hungarian, however, expressed his satisfaction with Vinesh’s progress to the final and that she is the first Indian woman to reach the gold medal match at the Olympics.

“We will continue to be proud that our professional program was able to beat the best wrestler in the world and bring an Indian wrestler to the Olympic final for the first time in history,” he added.

Akos also wrote about what was going on behind the scenes of the wrestlers’ protest led by Vinesh, Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia.

“Vinesh had pleaded with Sakshi and Bajrang not to throw their hard-earned Olympic medals into the river. She pleaded with them to keep them because they were special. But they explained to her that the journey was important and her achievement was not defined by medals,” he wrote, according to The Indian Express.
