Denny Hamlin on Cup pole after rain cancellation in qualifying in Michigan

Denny Hamlin will start from the pole for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway after qualifying was canceled due to bad weather.

Hamlin, who finished second last weekend at Richmond Raceway, will share the front row with fellow 23XI Racing driver Tyler Reddick.

Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell will start third, Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson will start fourth. Reddick’s 23XI colleague Bubba Wallace completes the top five.

Chase Elliott, Ross Chastain (who was the fastest in the shortened practice), Ryan Blaney, William Byron and Austin Dillon complete the top 10 in the squad.

Rain began falling minutes into Saturday’s scheduled practice session, causing early stoppages before the race was finally called off after about 15 minutes on the track. As the storms intensified, NASCAR decided to cancel both the remainder of practice and qualifying and focus on the afternoon Xfinity Series race, with the lineup determined by the rulebook.

The FireKeepers Casino 400 is scheduled to air on Sunday, August 18 at 2:30 p.m. ET on the USA Network.
