Somehow Attack on Titan has returned one last time

Before Attack on Titan Anime finally wrapped up late last year, it was a running joke that the show just wouldn’t end. Splitting into four parts over three years gave it a notorious reputation, and it turns out we’re not quite done yet.

Today, Studio MAPPA announced that it is working on another film for the series. Aptly titled Attack on Titan The Movie: The Final Attack, The 145-minute film covers the last two parts of the anime’s final season (episodes 29-35). Speaking to Crunchyroll, series director Yuichiro Hayashi said that the visuals would be updated from the version that originally aired. When asked why the finale was turned into a film, he explained that he drew storyboards for the final season during development, “(believing) that it would be seen as one film. To have the opportunity for everyone to see it in the best possible environment, the theater, is a dream come true for me.”

To be honest, compilation movies are nothing new for Attack on Titan. There was at least one per season, and later films served as retrospectives for the seasons they were attached to. In the case of season four, the final two installments were initially released as a pair of specials before later being released as individual episodes. Still, it’s a bit weird that MAPPA hasn’t been able to fully break away from this series and move on yet. Will this be the studio’s true, final goodbye before it commits to Jujutsu Kaisen or other projects? We will find out when Attack on Titan The Movie: The Final Attack will be released in Japanese cinemas on November 8th.

And if this film doesn’t sound to your taste, Attack on Titan The final chapters will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on November 26th.
