Are you sure? Review of Episode 3

Things are a little less reserved in Are you sure? Episode 3. BTS members Jungkook and Jimin are joined by their bandmate V, who insists on witnessing the portion of the pre-recorded vacation on Jeju Island. While the first two episodes seemed a bit more stripped down compared to their previous reality series efforts, Episode 3 goes full-on luxury as they explore and enjoy everything the island has to offer.

This is partly due to the nature of the environment they find themselves in. The monotonous familiarity of upstate New York is very different from the dreamy landscape of Jeju Island. Are you sure? Episode 3 can rest on the beautiful scenery and the general charisma of the band members. But we almost want to see more of the island itself, and instead much of Episode 3 is limited to partially interior locations. We keep hearing about how beautiful the ocean view is without seeing much of it aside from aerial shots of their ride.

Instead, we spend a lot of time in their rented villa – with an extra bed for V, a late stowaway – and doing indoor activities. In some cases, this is fun. For example, the indoor climbing gym is delightful, especially when you see the three personalities tackling various obstacles. Jungkook almost flies through the activities, while V takes a more measured, cautious approach. It even adds to the now-running joke of Jimin suffering during these outings when he accidentally bites his lip.

The three of them provide some of the funniest moments through their easy-going dynamic and incessant teasing. Jimin in particular is a target, as he seems to still be suffering from an upset stomach. And of course, it’s hilarious to watch Jungkook and V scarf down a meal upon arrival while Jimin watches, who looks on. The food aspect of these series is always a big draw, and for a place like Jeju Island, known for its unique cuisine, it would have been nice to see more of it, even if we haven’t even captured a full day of it yet.

The second part of the episode drags even for the most ardent fan. While it’s theoretically fun to watch the three of them go-karting, the amount of time spent on it is excessive. Honestly, you can’t watch someone drive the same track forever and still find it exciting. This is one of the moments where the series loses its touch as a travel documentary and becomes more focused on media for fan consumption.

The assumption is that fans don’t care what they see as long as they see their favorite idols. This does a disservice to the series, which is otherwise mostly fun. Through stronger, more decisive editing and cutting certain activities, Are you sure? would improve immediately.

But that’s just one flaw in an otherwise delightful little series that understands the appeal of its stars and the fun of just watching them live. While Episode 3 could use more engagement and less time spent watching them run around their rented house, it remains charming. That’s especially true as we watch all three interact with one another and a pleasant and hilarious friendship develop.

Are you sure? Episode 3 would have needed more time to explore Jeju Island as part of an official travel series. Jungkook, Jimin, and the additional V charm with their boyish playfulness. Even though it’s not as consistently funny as the first two episodes, it’s a must-see for any BTS fan.

Are you sure? Episode 3 is now streaming on Disney+.
