New Terminal 1 at IGIA ready for operation from August 17

NEW DELHI: DIAL, operator of Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, on Wednesday said that the new Terminal T1 will be operational from August 17. IndiGo and SpiceJet will shift a significant portion of their domestic operations to the new terminal.

The old T1 was temporarily closed on June 28 after a roof collapse and flight operations were relocated to Terminal 2 and Terminal 3.

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) said the opening of T1 will reduce pressure on the other two terminals.

The new terminal has been developed as part of DIAL’s Phase 3A expansion project. “As per the plan, SpiceJet would shift 13 flights to Terminal 1 from August 17 and IndiGo would shift 34 flights from T2 and T3 to T1 from September 2,” DIAL said.

DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said the new upgraded T1 will significantly increase capacity and reduce pressure on T2 and T3. “Passengers can look forward to a smoother travel experience with improved amenities and advanced technology.”

Passengers of SpiceJet flights will have to enter through Gate A on the ground floor, while IndiGo passengers will have to enter through Gates 5 and 6 on the first floor. All incoming passengers will arrive at the ground floor, the statement said. The new T1 was inaugurated by the Prime Minister in March this year.

“We are determined to further reduce our carbon footprint”

Delhi airport has become the first airport in the country to achieve net zero carbon emissions status under the accreditation programme of Airport Council International (ACI), DIAL said on Wednesday. ACI is an industry association of the world’s airports.

The airport had originally set itself the goal of achieving zero CO2 emissions by 2030. However, this goal has been achieved much earlier than planned through various initiatives, including the use of renewable energy, the development of green airport infrastructure and the promotion of electric vehicles, DIAL said.

“In the face of climate change, we are committed to further reducing our carbon footprint and exploring sustainable aviation fuel options to reduce Scope 3 emissions,” said DIAL CEO.
