NCIS has released an extended trailer for the tribute episode in memory of late star David McCallum.

The Scottish actor, known to fans as Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard in the popular crime series, died last September. In a new episode airing next Monday (February 19), the team learns of Ducky’s death as he helps them solve one final case.

The clip, shared on Instagram, shows Ducky’s protégé and friend Dr. Jimmy Palmer, played by Brian Dietzen, realizing that his mentor has died, while other scenes focus on the grief of the rest of the NCIS team. A montage also shows former characters Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) sharing the screen with McCallum.

“Join us this Monday as we pay tribute to the beloved Ducky in a special episode you won’t want to miss,” the caption reads, suggesting fans are in for an emotional ride.

Dietzen, who co-wrote the episode dedicated to McCallum, commented: “On Monday, we will remember, mourn and celebrate a beloved family member. We’ll see you all then.”

The episode, titled “The Stories We Leave Behind,” follows the agents as they grieve for Ducky and find solace in working on one of his unfinished cases, involving a woman whose father was dishonorably discharged from the Marine Corps.

“Everyone at NCIS felt it was important to do an episode honoring such a legendary actor and, not least, a dear friend,” NCIS showrunners David North and Steven D. Binder told TVLine when sharing plans for a tribute.

“In the episode, the team learns of Ducky’s death and reflects on their memories of him in their grief. And true to Ducky’s conscientious and compassionate nature, he manages to solve one last crime with the team even after his death.”

NCIS airs on CBS in the US and returns with season 21 on February 12. Seasons 1 to 20 stream on Disney+ in the UK.
