Salido, a physics graduate of mixed Mexican and Native American descent, founded Taking Up Space in 2014. This nonprofit aims to address the underrepresentation of women, particularly Native American girls, in STEM fields. Based near Tucson, the organization provides mentoring, tutoring and space camp scholarships to underprivileged girls on a nearby reservation.
Salido’s initiative has gained recognition in the STEM community and inspired similar efforts across the country. Join us as we discuss the challenges and successes of her work in this episode of This Week in Space!

Most recently, he appeared in the NatGeo documentary about Tom Wolfe’s iconic book The right stuff.
Tariq Malik has been editor-in-chief of Space.com since 2019 and is responsible for Space.com’s editorial vision. He has been covering space news and science for 18 years. He joined the Space.com team in 2001, first as an intern and soon after as a full-time space reporter covering human spaceflight, exploration, astronomy and the night sky. He became managing editor of Space.com in 2009. As an on-air talent, he has presented space stories on CNN, Fox News, NPR and more.
Tariq is an Eagle Scout (yes, he earned the Space Exploration Merit Badge), Space Camp veteran (four times as a child, once as an adult), and has taken the ultimate “puke comet” flight while covering fires in zero gravity. Before joining Space.com, he was a staff reporter for the Los Angeles Times, covering urban and education issues. He holds degrees in journalism from the University of Southern California and New York University.
