Two people rescued from the sea after struggling in the water

Two people were rescued from the sea after they were reportedly found wandering in the water near a lighthouse, Coast Guard officials said.

A police officer and a member of the public successfully swam to one of the victims, who was “drifting fast on the incoming tide” near Leasowe Lighthouse on Saturday morning, the Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team said.

A coast guard rescue officer and other police officers managed to pull all three out, while the other victim got to safety.

Both victims were treated on site by emergency services and taken to hospital for further examination.

Geoff Simmons, deputy station manager of the Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team, said: “This was a time-critical rescue and was bravely carried out by the two rescuers.”

“The incident could have been avoided if we had prepared ourselves before heading to the beach, checked the tides and left the sandbanks in time.”

Coast Guard officials advise people not to enter the water in the area because the canyons are fast-flowing and “not suitable for swimming.”
