The Durand Cup derby between Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata has been cancelled due to ongoing protests in the city against the gruesome rape and murder of a trainee doctor.

The decision to cancel the match was taken after a meeting between the Kolkata Police and the tournament organisers. The two legendary clubs were to receive one point each and the fans a refund.

“Both teams will get one point each and fans will get a full refund of their tickets,” an official told PTI.

It was also announced that all Durand Cup matches scheduled to be played in Kolkata may be shifted to Jamshedpur. An official announcement is awaited.

Both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have made it to the knockout stages of the ongoing Durand Cup after collecting seven points from three matches. Both teams had won their previous group matches before Sunday’s derby, the final match of Group A, was called off.

Widespread protests followed the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the city on August 9.

On Saturday, the Indian Medical Association called for a 24-hour nationwide strike to protest the rape and murder of their colleague.
