Amid nationwide outrage over the rape and murder of a doctor-student in Kolkata, a 14-year-old girl has died after being allegedly raped by her teacher in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The victim, an eighth-grade student, lived in a village in Duddhi in Sonbhadra district. She died late Tuesday at Banaras Hindu University Hospital in Varanasi, where she had been undergoing treatment for 20 days.

The accused Vishambar is on the run.

According to the victim’s family, the accused worked as a physical education teacher at the school and had called her on December 30 last year to attend a sports event. He then took her to his house and raped her.

The family said the victim did not harm them for fear of public disgrace and her health gradually deteriorated after the incident.

She was sent to Chhattisgarh to visit her relatives where she was treated but her health condition remained the same. The victim then broke her silence and told her aunt about the incident and was subsequently admitted to the hospital.

Accused paid his family 30,000 rupees

According to the family, the accused paid them 30,000 rupees to keep quiet.

The family said they did not report the incident to the authorities fearing public disgrace. But as the victim’s health deteriorated, her father filed a police complaint on July 10 and a case was registered against Vishambar, a resident of Ballia in Uttar Pradesh.

The police have registered a case under the POCSO Act and formed two teams to arrest him.

“The accused will be arrested soon,” a senior police official said on Tuesday.

The incident came amid nationwide outrage over the rape and murder of a junior doctor while on duty at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The 31-year-old’s half-naked body was found last week in the seminar hall of the state hospital.
