“CBS Mornings” will be expanded to include a third hour, debut expected at the end of September

CBS Morning plans to add a third hour and expects it to debut late next month.

Executive producer Shawna Thomas wrote in a memo to staff that the third hour would be developed for CBS-owned stations, with a simulcast on the streaming channel CBS News 24/7.

“Now it’s not going to look or feel exactly the same as it did in the first two hours. Yes, the talent will be a little different and the name will be a little different, but it will still be the intelligent and engaging content that everyone expects from the CBS Morning family,” Thomas wrote in the memo.

CBS’s redesigned morning show premiered in 2021 and features Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil, Nate Burleson and Vladimir Duthiers. CBS Morning is the newest morning show to expand beyond the traditional two-hour 7-9 a.m. time slot. Today was extended to three hours in 2000 and later expanded to include a fourth hour. Good morning America added GMA3 in 2018.

Thomas wrote: “The expansion CBS Morning shows a commitment to the brand and the idea that there is an opportunity for growth during a difficult time. So let’s do it together and produce another hour of TV/digital video/content we can be proud of.”
