Bruce Lee heir sues Chinese fast food chain for $30 million
By Bloomberg News
(Bloomberg) – Bruce Lee’s daughter has accused a popular fast-food chain of abusing the kung fu superstar’s image in a Chinese court.
Bruce Lee Enterprises, whose legal representative is Shannon Lee, is seeking 210 million yuan ($30 million) in damages from the Real Kungfu chain, as well as 88,000 yuan in legal costs, Jiemian reported on Thursday. The case could also test the Chinese government’s commitment to protecting intellectual property rights.
A court in Shanghai accepted the lawsuit against Guangzhou Real Kungfu Catering Management Co. and two other related companies for image rights violations in early December, state news agency Xinhua reported. Shannon Lee is also demanding that the chain, which is called “Zhen Gongfu” in China and is known for steaming its food, stop using her father’s image immediately and clarify within 90 days that it has nothing to do with the martial arts legend, Jiemian said.
Real Kungfu said in a statement on its official Weibo account that it was “confused” by the lawsuit as it has been using the logo since 2004 and was preparing a response. The image shows a dark-haired man in a yellow jumpsuit in a kung fu pose that looks like Bruce Lee.
