NCIS has confirmed plot details for the upcoming tribute episode to David McCallum.

McCalllum, who played Dr. Donald Mallard (aka Ducky) in all previous 20 seasons, died in September last year.

The CBS series previously released an emotional trailer giving a taste of the episode paying tribute to the beloved actor, but now more details have been revealed.

The episode is titled “The Stories We Leave Behind” and deals with McCallum’s death, paying tribute to his character in the series.

The official synopsis for the episode reads: “As NCIS mourns the loss of Ducky, the agents find solace in working on one of his unfinished cases, involving a woman whose father was dishonorably discharged from the Marine Corps.”

The episode, which will air on October 17, 19 February shortly after the start of the 21st season, is co-written with Brian Dietzen, who plays Ducky’s protégé and friend Dr. Jimmy Palmer.

In an earlier statement to TVLine, co-showrunners and executive producers Steven D. Binder and David North revealed details about the special tribute episode.

They said: “Everyone at NCIS felt it was important to do an episode honoring such a legendary actor, not to mention a dear friend.

“In the episode, the team learns of Ducky’s death and reflects on their memories of him in their grief. And true to Ducky’s conscientious and compassionate nature, he manages to solve one final crime with the team even after his death.”

They added that there will be “a very touching and special moment that you won’t want to miss,” and hinted that there might be some special guest appearances in the episode.

Back in September, the NCIS franchise paid tribute to the veteran actor, writing: “David was a gifted actor and writer and was loved by many people around the world. He lived an incredible life and his legacy will live on forever through his family and the countless hours in film and television that will never fade.”

NCIS: Secret Service Stories will be broadcast on CBS in the US and returns on February 12th with season 21. Seasons 1-20 will be streamed on Disney+ in Great Britain.
