Kindergarten teacher in Florida allegedly hits child angrily and pushes him to the ground

An employee at a daycare center in Florida has been accused of angrily hitting a child and throwing her to the ground during an apparent time-out, police said.

Marlissa Qyera Rozier, 25, faces charges of child neglect with aggravated assault after she was seen on video surveillance lifting a child into a 2- to 3-foot-high bag in a daycare classroom and violently throwing her to the ground, according to an affidavit, Fox 35 reported.

The investigation into the alleged incident began Tuesday after the owner of M&M Family Care Center, Inc. in Cocoa, Florida, reported that he had observed surveillance video of a teacher abusing a girl in a classroom.

The girl, Journ’i, also began crying more than usual and told her parents Monday night that her bottom hurt, the child’s parents told police.

According to the affidavit, investigators reviewed surveillance footage and observed the child playing with a toy and “jumping around happily.” In the footage, Rozier spoke a few words, then angrily walked up to the child and hit him on the head before he fell to the ground.

Approximately twenty minutes later, Rozier approached the child again, grabbed her by the arms and lifted her three feet in the air before aggressively pushing her into a corner and throwing her to the ground, causing the child to slam his head and body against the wall.

“It’s heartbreaking. I don’t like watching it because it makes me angry every time I see it,” Journ’i’s mother Annie Smith told Fox 35.

Smith recalled her daughter trying to explain what happened in the incident.

“She told her sister and said, ‘My teacher hit me like that,’ and she jumped on the floor and fell back down. I told my husband, ‘Watch what she says,'” Smith told the outlet.

Another teacher at the daycare also said she went into the classroom after hearing a thud, but Rozier explained the child had fallen and “everything was fine,” according to arrest records, Fox 35 reported. When questioned about the incident, Rozier again claimed the girl had fallen before she went to lunch and did not return to work for the rest of the day.

“The daycare did everything correctly,” Cocoa Police spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez told Fox 35. “They took the necessary action. The employee is no longer employed there.”

More charges are expected in that case as investigators said they have identified additional victims in the classroom.

Rozier was arrested on Wednesday and released the next day on $5,000 bail.
