Former journalist Howard Wright dies at the age of 79

The respected racing journalist Howard Wright, one of the founding members of the Racing Postdied on Friday, the publication reported. He was 79 and wrote until a few months ago.

The Doncaster native joined tense as an employee in 1964 before joining the Sheffield Morning Telegraph as racing editor for 11 years, eventually becoming deputy sports editor. After a period as deputy racing editor of the Daily Telegraphhe moved to Racing Post when it began in 1986, along with the publication’s founding editor, Graham Rock. Also in 1986, he became a member of the British Flat Pattern Committee, a role he held until 2009. He later became Industry Editor at Racing PostHe remained at the newspaper in that role until his retirement in 2012. Even in retirement, Wright continued to write part-time articles for various industry publications.

He has been a trustee of the National Horseracing College since 1990 and vice-chairman of the organisation since 2004.


“The thoughts of everyone at Doncaster Racecourse are with the family, friends and colleagues of Howard Wright,” the racecourse posted on X on Friday. “Howard was a great friend of racing and in particular of Doncaster Racecourse. He will be sorely missed on St. Leger Day this year, a day he has not missed since 1948.”
