How to remove self-tanning stains from bed linen with a simple method

Fake tan is an extremely popular beauty product here in the UK as many people find it difficult to get a natural tan – especially in the British weather.

There are many brands and styles to choose from, including lotions that build color over time and foams that develop overnight while you sleep.

Today, it’s easier than ever to go to bed and wake up with a sun-kissed complexion without actually going outside or using tanning beds. But fake tan lovers know all too well the stains it can leave on bedsheets – especially white ones.

However, there is a very simple trick that can remove stains and make your bed linen look “bright white” again.

Online furniture retailer Wayfair spoke to TikToker Ann Russell, a woman who has more than 2.6 million followers on the platform thanks to her pragmatic cleaning tips.

And she exclusively revealed a helpful tip that will help you remove stubborn self-tanner stains from your bed linen, clothes and towels and make them look like new again.

Ann said: “I have never used self-tanner but my daughter has and she has white bedding. I find that oxygen bleach in any form works wonderfully. Also, if you have white bedding, a dose of Ariel before washing with Ace Green or peroxide on a long cotton wash cycle at 60°C will make the bedding sparkling white again.”

Oxygen bleach tends to be gentler than chlorine bleach and can effectively remove stains and brighten dull fabrics – making it ideal for removing fake tan stains.

And if you’re a passionate self-tanner and find that stains on your sheets are a common occurrence, it might be worth replacing your bedding, as some fabrics are better suited to this than others.

Daniela Venturini, art director and trend forecaster at Wayfair, said: “If you are known for staining your bedding with self-tanner, avoid light-coloured bedding. Instead, opt for darker shades or patterned sheets as these are less prone to unsightly stains. Colours like navy blue and black are great choices.”

She also recommended choosing something made of cotton or microfiber, as this material will last longer even with frequent washing.
