Yellowstone Star Kevin Costner returns to the Western genre with his film series Horizon: An American Saga, The first part is scheduled to hit theaters on June 28. The first film in a planned four-part series premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and was greeted with a standing ovation lasting 11 minutes and 40 seconds, which brought the actor to tears.

Costner, who stars in and directs the Western films, has wanted to bring this project to the screen since 1988, when he started dreaming about it. He co-wrote it with Jon Baird. Dances with Wolves Star announced that production has begun on the third film and that he has plans for a fourth. The second installment in the series will hit theaters in the summer after the first.

The Western films will document the expansion of the American West before and after the Civil War. The perspectives of the colonists and the Native Americans – especially in the fourth film – will be interwoven to tell the complex story. The film spans 15 years after the end of one of America’s defining conflicts and traces the tensions of another – Manifest Destiny and the Native Americans.

How many films make Horizon: An American Saga?

The cast essentially has four scripts at their disposal for four different feature-length chapters of the project. The first two films were released in theaters by New Line and Warner Bros. The following films Chapter 1 are not considered sequels, but as individual parts that tell the whole story.

Horizon: An American Saga, Chapter 1 Streaming on Max begins Friday, August 23rd.

The first film was released in cinemas on June 28th. It will be available digitally from July 16th.

Who is in Horizon: An American Saga?

Chapter 1 features an impressive cast including Luke Wilson, Tatanka Means, Sienna Miller, Jena Malone, Wase Winyan Chief, Jamie Campbell Bower, Jena Malone, Sam Worthington, Isabelle Fuhrman, Ella Hunt, Michael Rooker, Abbey Lee, Danny Huston, Will Patton and more.

Giovanni Ribisi, Glynn Turman, Tom Payne, Kathleen Quinlan, Angus MacFayden and countless others also appear and disappear in the first film. There are more than 170 speaking roles.

Costner’s son Hayes also appears in the film and his namesake is a character from the story – Hayes Ellison.

When Horizon: An American Saga, Chapter 2 come out?

The second film was scheduled to be released on August 16, but after the screening of Chapter 1 at the box office, Chapter 2 was taken off the Warner Bros. schedule for August.

Given the film’s target audience, WB wanted to give them time to go to the theater and see the first film before the second one was released.

When will Horizon: An American Saga Are chapters 3 and 4 coming out?

Costner told Deadline that he had already shot three days of Part 3. He hopes to return to Cannes with the third chapter.

How much did this project cost?

Costner told Deadline that he would raise $98 million for the first three films in the series himself. He would earn $100 million from financing the fourth film. In Cannes, he said he would sacrifice the four houses he owns to make the westerns.

“I’m trying to do the third one. I’ve been knocking on every boat in Cannes to get them to help me,” he said. “The guys say, ‘Come on, let’s take a picture.’ I say, ‘No, get your checkbook out.'”
