Man shot by armed police in Surrey dies

The shooting took place on Nursery Road in Knaphill on Sunday.

A man died after shot dead by armed police in Surrey on Sunday.

Police were called to an altercation between two people in Nursery Road, Knaphill on the outskirts of Woking. One of them was in possession of a weapon.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said the 29-year-old man died on Thursday.

Following a report from Surrey Police, the IOPC has launched an investigation into the incident.

IOPC Regional Director Mel Palmer said: “This is a tragic incident in which, sadly, a man has lost his life.

“We have met with the man’s family to explain our role. Our thoughts are with them and everyone affected by this incident.”

The man was taken to hospital after being shot at the scene.

Surrey police said he was in a critical but stable condition on Monday.

Weapon at the crime scene

The IOPC said it had learned from police call logs that officers received a report of an altercation with a man believed to be carrying a firearm on Nursery Road shortly after 00:30 (BST) on Sunday.

The caller reported that the man then entered an address.

“Shortly afterwards, armed Surrey police arrived and approached the address after setting up a cordon,” it said.

“Police body-worn footage shows officers asking the resident of the address to come to the door empty-handed.

“The man opened the door and appeared to point a gun at the officers.”

The IOPC said one shot was fired by a firearms officer and the man was hit shortly after 1.20am.

It was said that a bullet was also fired from the police baton and that officers immediately administered first aid while an ambulance was called.

The investigating authority announced that “a weapon not in police service” was found and confiscated at the crime scene.

Surrey Police said: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected during this difficult time.”

The company added that it would have no further comment on the investigation into the incident.
