Sofia Vergara has revealed that she is begging her former Modern Family co-star Ed O’Neill to “not die” so they can do a reboot.

The American sitcom first hit screens in 2009 and ran for 11 seasons before ending in 2020.

It followed the lives of three different families in a suburb of Los Angeles, connected by their patriarch Jay Pritchett, played by Ed.

During its run, the series won a total of 22 Emmy Awards and its success also made 52-year-old Sofia the highest-paid actress on US television.

Although the series ended just four years ago, Sofia is already keen to return to her role, but joked that something is standing in her way.

“I always joke with him,” she said of her former co-star Ed, 78.

“Ed, don’t die. Because if we do the sequel, it’s going to take some time and you’re the oldest of us. You can’t be dead!” she told Variety.

The actress also recalled that after seeing Ed in the recent miniseries “Clipped,” in which he plays LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling, she said to him, “You look old.”

Sofia played Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, the younger wife of Ed’s Jay, for 12 years.

She also said that she would “die to be back on that set.”

“That would be so much fun. Maybe a TV movie?” she wondered.

Earlier this year, her co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who played Mitchell Pritchett, sent fans of the sitcom into an uproar with a cryptic Instagram post.

He shared a photo of the Dunphy house in his Instagram stories and wrote: “I haven’t seen this view in a long time.”

Naturally, the blast from the past caused an internet meltdown, with many Modern Family viewers speculating that a reboot might be on the way.

Although there were originally plans for a spin-off following Mitchell, his husband Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and their adopted daughter Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) as they adjust to their new home in Missouri, it was never realized.

Speaking about the possible 2022 show, Jesse explained during an appearance on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live that it had been put on hold.

“There were discussions. I think the network decided against it. This is the first time I’ve said something like that!” he said.

Modern Family is streaming on Disney Plus.
