Jake Jarman wins his first Olympic medal for Great Britain with bronze on the floor
Briton Jake Jarman won his first Olympic medal with bronze on the floor at the Bercy Arena.
The 22-year-old went into the final with the highest score in the qualification and was also the leader in the floor score in the men’s all-around final.
However, his routine was not quite as clean as that of gold medalist Carlos Edriel Yulo of the Philippines, who scored 15.001 points. Israel’s Artem Dolgopyat took silver, with Jarman just behind with 14.933 points.
This secured Britain’s first medal of the Games in artistic gymnastics, after Bryony Page won gold in trampolining at the same arena on Friday.
“I’m super proud,” said Jarman. “It’s definitely a huge achievement. Floor: Although I post some crazy videos, I haven’t done well on floor at major championships.
“I have only won one bronze medal at a European Championship so far. To now go home with an Olympic medal is like skipping a step. It’s incredible.”
Jarman’s teammate Luke Whitehouse, European champion in this discipline, finished sixth with 14.466 despite a very impressive routine, after receiving a deduction for a difficulty following a low landing.
Jarman will have another chance at a medal when he competes in the vault final on Sunday, where he is the world champion.
