How Collin Morikawa’s birdies benefit St. Jude at the FedEx Cup

In the heat of the FedEx Cup playoff race, Collin Morikawa remains true to the principles of the title sponsors of the PGA FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Morikawa has pledged to donate $1,000 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for every birdie he makes during the three playoff events. He made five birdies during Thursday’s first round at TPC Southwind.

For Morikawa, who is part of the professional team at golf apparel company TaylorMade, it is a continuation of a commitment to St. Jude that he shares with his wife.

“My wife is going to run the New York Marathon and we’re going to try to raise as much money as we can for St. Jude, which will be her charitable donation for the marathon,” Morikawa said. “I think anything that comes together, comes together, whether it’s FedEx and TaylorMade, St. Jude, ourselves and my family.”

“We’re going to do everything we can during these playoffs and the next few months to help some great kids.”

FedEx partnered with TaylorMade to create a custom playoff-themed golf bag, which Morikawa unveiled on Wednesday. The bag was made from recycled FedEx packaging and TaylorMade golf gloves. In addition to his birdie promise, Morikawa will use the bag at all three FedExCup playoff events.

FedEx will also match Morikawa’s $1,000 donation to St. Jude for every birdie or more he makes with the bag during the playoffs.

“A really special bag. Really cool,” he said Wednesday. “It’s obviously very meaningful, not just in how it’s made. On the side are recycled gloves, recycled materials. Someone said there was part of a FedEx truck in there.”

Morikawa, fourth in the FedEx Cup Playoff rankings with 2,456 points, finished Thursday’s first round with a 68 (2 under par). He finished his second round on Friday at 1 under par with a 71 and two birdies on holes 14 and 15.
