Elon Musk initially said the Cybertruck would start at $39,900. Now you can hardly buy it for less than $100,000.

  • The cheapest Cybertruck currently available costs almost $100,000.

  • Tesla has quietly increased the price of the all-wheel-drive Cybertruck and removed the option to order a cheaper version.

  • This is the latest blow to Tesla fans who may be waiting for a cheaper version of the truck.

When Elon Musk first introduced Tesla’s Cybertruck in 2019, he touted the futuristic pickup truck as a competitor to the Ford F-150 with a starting price of $39,900.

Almost five years later, that dream seems further away than ever. Currently, the cheapest Cybertruck costs a whopping $100,000.

According to screenshots from the Internet Archive, Tesla has quietly raised the price of the all-wheel-drive version of the Cybertruck to just under $100,000 and removed the option to pre-order the $61,000 rear-wheel-drive version for 2025.

That means if you want to buy the truck, your only choices are between the all-wheel-drive Cybertruck for $99,990 and the Cyberbeast for $119,990.

It’s unclear what this means for the planned cheaper versions of the Cybertruck, although Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill seemed to confirm in a post on X that they haven’t been canceled entirely.

Because of its price and relative rarity, the Cybertruck has become something of a status symbol since its launch last year, with celebrities such as Kim Kardashian having been spotted behind the wheel of the pickup truck.

Musk said in 2019 that the Cybertruck would start at $39,900, with the highest-end version costing about $70,000.

But the actual price of the Cybertruck left some fans bitterly disappointed.

Tesla had announced that cheaper versions of the vehicle would be launched in 2025, but the unique design meant the company faced enormous challenges in expanding production.

The new uncertainty is the latest obstacle for the Cybertruck, which has already been recalled several times, including over fears that the accelerator pedal could lock up.

One benefit for potential Cybertruck owners is that Tesla is now announcing deliveries of the all-wheel-drive and Cyberbeast versions for this year rather than 2025, suggesting the company is finally making progress in increasing production.

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider sent outside of normal business hours.

Correction: August 12, 2024 – This article was updated to clarify that only the rear-wheel drive version of the Cybertruck was removed as an ordering option from the Tesla website.
