City of Gothenburg issues boil water order

NORTH PLATTE, Nebraska (KNOP) – The city of Gothenburg is implementing a boil water order.

According to a social media post from the City of Gothenburg, E. coli bacteria were discovered in August 2024, indicating that further problems with water treatment or distribution need to be investigated.

E. coli is a bacteria whose presence indicates that water may be contaminated by human or animal waste. Human pathogens in this waste can cause short-term effects such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms.

The city of Gothenburg is urging residents not to drink water without boiling it first. Officials said water should be boiled for one minute and then allowed to cool before use.

Until further notice, boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and preparing meals.

E. coli may pose a greater risk to infants, young children, some elderly people, and people with severely weakened immune systems.
