Bayern wins the DFB Cup comfortably after three Bundesliga clubs narrowly avoided surprises

BERLIN (AP) — FC Bayern Munich comfortably defeated second-division Ulm 4-0 in the DFB Cup on Friday. Three other Bundesliga teams, however, all needed extra time or a penalty shootout to win against lower-class opponents. The evening was almost a surprise.

Thomas Müller scored two goals for Bayern in the first 15 minutes before Kingsley Coman and substitute Harry Kane added two more goals shortly before the end to give new coach Vincent Kompany a win in his first competitive game as manager.

But Hoffenheim, St. Pauli and Mainz had to work much harder before securing their place in the next round.

Hoffenheim had the most trouble against third division team Würzburger Kickers.

Hoffenheim fell behind after 11 minutes, but an own goal eight minutes later forced extra time. Würzburg took the lead again in the 100th minute, but Marius Bülter equalized for Hoffenheim in the 107th minute and the game had to be decided on penalties.

Würzburg captain Dominik Meisel was the only player to miss a penalty and Hoffenheim won the penalty shootout 5-3.

Fourth division club Hallescher almost embarrassed last season’s second division champions, St. Pauli.

Hallescher led 2-1 until Adam Dźwigała equalized in the 94th minute. Substitute Lars Ritzka scored the decisive goal for Hamburg in the 110th minute to give them a 3-2 win.

Mainz recovered from a 1-0 deficit against third division side Wehen Wiesbaden and needed extra-time goals from captain Jonathan Burkardt and midfielder Nadiem Amiri to claim a 3-1 victory.
