Sunland Park Police Investigate Water Test Fraud and Ask Public for Help

Sunland Park police warned residents Friday about a possible scam involving a fake Home Depot employee and water testing.

According to SPPD, a resident found a letter on his door from what he claimed was the water company, stating that it was the second request for the resident to call a number listed on the card.

When the resident called the number, he was reportedly asked to schedule a home visit.

According to EPPD, at the time of the appointment, a man wearing an orange vest and a fake Home Depot name tag showed up at the resident’s home and explained to the homeowner that they were there to test the water.

During the “appointment,” the man allegedly asked for the victim’s social security number and identification information.

After the resident reported the encounter to SPPD, officers called the number provided, 575-537-1627, and after asking a few questions, they were eventually hung up on.

According to SPPD, the victim contacted Home Depot in El Paso before contacting police, but was told the company does not employ such employees.

The SPPD is now using this experience to remind citizens that no government agency, no water/utility company, and no reputable private business will have its field agents ask for sensitive or private information such as social security numbers, driver’s licenses, government-issued IDs, or passport information.

If you find yourself in such a situation, the SPPD asks that you call the Central Operations Center at 575-526-0795 and never share sensitive or private information with anyone.

The SPPD is also asking the public for help in identifying the man who allegedly carried out the fraud and was captured on a surveillance camera in his home.

Anyone with information can call the Central Operations Center at the number above and ask to speak to a Sunland Park employee.

If you wish to remain anonymous, please let the dispatcher and the officer know.
