This weekend is the last Bay Bridge Series between the A’s and the Giants before the A’s go

The historic “Bay Bridge Series” between the SF Giants and the Oakland A’s will play its final game on Saturday and Sunday, as the A’s only have six more weeks to play in Oakland.

No matter how good or bad the two teams were, there was always something special when the San Francisco Giants played the Oakland A’s, a contest that became known as the Bay Bridge Series. It all recalls the 1989 World Series between the Giants and the A’s, the third game of which was famously interrupted by the Loma Prieta earthquake. The A’s and Giants had never played each other before that time until 1997, when interleague play began and Major League Baseball encouraged these regional rivalries that hadn’t existed before.

Since then, the A’s and Giants have played each other 146 times in the regular season, according to the Bay Area News Group. (The A’s lead the series 75-71.) But Saturday and Sunday will be the last time San Francisco plays Oakland, because this weekend will be the last time the Giants play in Oakland, as The Athletic reminds us.

Oh sure, the Giants and A’s will play each other again. But the A’s will be the Sacramento A’s next season (although, in a massive insult to Sacramento, simply known as “the A’s”, without Sacramento in the name). And then they’re supposedly moving to Las Vegas in 2028, but we’ll see if their planned Las Vegas Ballpark actually ends up being built.

Both of this week’s games are away games for the Giants at the Oakland Coliseum. Saturday’s game starts at 4:07 p.m., and Sunday afternoon’s game starts at 1:07 p.m. Tickets for both games currently range from $53 to $170 on the official MLB website. Third-party sellers may offer better (or worse) terms.

This isn’t a particularly epic final Bay Bridge Series. Both teams are ten or more games under .500 and have little chance of even making the Wild Card race. However, there is perhaps one historically fitting thing about this final meeting of the SF Giants and Oakland A’s: The Giants are coached by Bob Melvin, the only manager to coach both the A’s and Giants since they first met in the 1989 World Series.
