Former Australian speedster Shaun Tait explained the reasons why today’s generation of fast bowlers can no longer bowl at over 150 kmph as consistently as they once did. Tait was one of the fastest bowlers in the world in his prime and was fascinating to watch.

Tait was particularly good in the limited overs format, bowling four quick overs while consistently reaching speeds of between 155 and 160 km/h. He is still the second fastest bowler in the world with a top speed of 161.1 km/h achieved against England at Lord’s in 2010.

Shaun Tait highlights the bowling program factor

Shaun Tait explained that the bowling programs are similar for all bowlers of the current generation and there are similar protocols created by the coaches. He recalled his generation with fast bowlers like Shoaib Akthar and Brett Lee where the bowler had more say during the bowling programs than the coaches which was one of the main factors.

“I could talk about it for an hour… I think everywhere you go right now, the bowling programs are very similar, workload, programs, you have to do this, you have to do that. When I played, Shoaib and Brett Lee before that, we had our programs, but we had a big influence on them.” Shaun Tait told it in a chat with Sportskeeda.

“We were not confronted with an almost robotic thing” – Shaun Tait

Shaun Tait claimed that the current structure for fast bowlers is like a robot where the instructions have already been laid out. He added that in his generation, it is his own responsibility to perform and he has to take care of his body, whereas the current generation bowlers have the luxury of rest days, which has affected their speed.

“We weren’t faced with a robot-like thing. You’re not doing the same thing day in and day out. You’re not constantly being told what to do by other people. You take a little bit of responsibility for your career and do what feels good for your body.”

“Nowadays they are told, ‘Take a rest day now,’ ‘Bowl a certain number of balls today.’ For me it was like, I’m going to bowl hard for two days and then have two days off. My body felt like I needed a break, so I’m going to take a break.” he added.
