Judge removed from office after handcuffing teenager during outing

A Detroit judge who ordered a teenager to wear handcuffs and a prison uniform because he fell asleep in his courtroom during an outing has been removed from the case. NBC News.

A 15-year-old girl visited Detroit’s 36th District Court on Tuesday (August 13) with Greening of Detroit, a nonprofit environmental organization, as judge Kenneth Koenig reprimanded her for falling asleep in his courtroom.

King decided to make an example of a 15-year-old girl in front of her peers, Colleen Robara Greening of Detroit spokesperson said in a statement.

“He forced her to be handcuffed and put on a prison uniform and yelled at her for falling asleep in his courtroom,” Robar continued. “Although the judge tried to show her respect, his methods were unacceptable.”

On Thursday (15 August) William McConico announced that King was relieved of his duties following a “swift and thorough internal investigation.” King will also “complete the necessary training to address the underlying issues that led to this incident,” McConico said.

The chief judge noted that the court “remains firmly committed to providing access to justice in an environment free from intimidation or disrespect. Judge King’s actions on August 13 do not reflect that commitment.” The court regularly welcomes students “to observe and participate in the judicial process with the goal of providing valuable educational experiences and promoting familiarity with the legal system.”

“We sincerely hope that this incident does not affect our long-standing relationships with local schools,” McConico added.

King told local media that the teenager’s “attitude” prompted him to teach her a lesson.

“It was her whole attitude and her whole being that bothered me,” King said.

“This kind of thing doesn’t usually happen. But I felt compelled to do it because I didn’t like the child’s attitude,” he added. “I haven’t been treated with such disrespect in a long time.”

The teenager’s mother said her daughter was tired during the trip because her family was constantly commuting between different dormitories.

When asked why King was removed from his list, the mother said, “It’s a lesson for him.”
