Orem family cleans up after rainwater smashes window

OREM- Some Orem homeowners are still cleaning up after Tuesday’s storm and preparing for potentially even wetter weather this weekend.

The Redd family has laid out sandbags in case it hits them again. The monsoon caught the family by surprise when water and hail entered their basement, which was used as the mother-in-law’s apartment for her extended family.

“We have a mother-in-law’s apartment. We had to check on Grandma and Grandpa. So we ran over and noticed there was a leak,” said Whitney Redd.

Redds said the storm came quickly. She and her children were trying to get electronics and anything else that might be damaged by water out of the basement.

“My husband was trying to get through the window, getting the hail out, getting the rain out, just getting things out,” Reed said.

But the pressure on the window was too great and Reed’s husband came downstairs to warn everyone to get out.

“I just thought, OK, the window is going to break and there’s going to be water. But then it started and I had no idea it would be this big. Just unbelievable,” Reed said.

Family and neighbors then cleaned out the basement of the apartment, removing the floorboards and almost everything else. Redd said fortunately no one was injured.

“You know how to replace this, people get it. So I’m just thankful everyone came out,” she said.

The in-laws only moved into the apartment a few months ago and therefore did not purchase flood insurance as it is an additional policy. The family has set up a GoFundMe campaign* to cover the damages.
