Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu receives bronze medal from Paris 2024

Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu received her bronze medal in the artistic gymnastics floor final at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, at a ceremony on Friday (16 August) in Bucharest.

Barbosu’s bronze medal is the first individual medal for a Romanian gymnast at the Olympic Games since London2012When Catalina Ponor won silver on floor and Sandra Izbasa Gold in the vault claimed.

Jordanian chilis of the United States had originally been awarded the bronze medal immediately after competing at Paris 2024 last week after her score for the routine was upgraded shortly after she left the floor, moving her from fifth to third place ahead of Barbosu and her Romanian teammate. Sabrina Maneca-Voinea.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled on Saturday that the investigation that had raised the U.S. gymnast’s score was invalid because the American team filed its appeal after the permitted deadline. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) then amended the final floor exercise results to change the ranking. Barbosa Third: The bronze medal goes to the Romanian.

USA Gymnastics announced on Sunday that it had submitted new evidence to CAS showing that the original investigation was submitted within the time limit, but the federation later issued a statement saying that CAS’s “rules do not allow for review of an arbitration award, even when conclusive new evidence is presented.”

The much-publicized decision prompted the following reaction from Chiles on her social media on Thursday (August 15): “I am at a loss for words,” she wrote. “This decision feels unfair and is a heavy blow, not only for me, but for everyone who has supported my path.”

“I had faith in the appeal by USAG (USA Gymnastics), which conclusively proved that my result complied with all the rules,” she added. “That appeal was unsuccessful.”

Barbosu, who spoke at the Romanian ceremony in Bucharest, added: “At the moment I can’t help but think Sabrina (Maneca-Voinea) and Jordan too. It’s a difficult situation for us with so many uncertainties and overwhelming emotions. I want to believe that the day will come when all three of us get a bronze medal.”

The gold medal was won by Brazilian Rebeca Andrade, and the silver went to American Simone Biles.
