Shawnee Mission Northwest student dies after medical emergency during training

SHAWNEE, Kansas (KCTV) – A 15-year-old student at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School has died just days after the start of the school year.

A sophomore was hospitalized after requiring medical attention during an offseason conditioning workout. Johnson County MED-ACT confirmed that emergency personnel were called to Shawnee Mission Northwest High School on Wednesday afternoon and transported a 15-year-old student to the hospital in critical condition.

The school district learned on Friday that the student had died.

The district shared the news in an email to families.

Gruman mentioned that much is still unknown about Ovet’s death.

School staff are available to talk to anyone struggling with the emotional situation. The school district said Ovet was a well-liked member of the Shawnee Mission Northwest community.

“This was shocking news for all of us. This kind of thing shouldn’t happen. Young people shouldn’t die,” said David Smith, communications director for the Shawnee Mission School District. “We’re all trying to cope with it, process it and feel the grief that comes with it. This kind of thing shouldn’t happen.”

Ovet’s family asks for privacy during this devastating time.
