Eight swimming spots fall after Debby by Swim Guide

WASHINGTON, NC (WITN) – Eight locations in Eastern Carolina have failed the Swim Guide test, others have yet to pass the test.

Sound Rivers has reported that the following sites failed the Swim Guide fecal bacteria test:

  • Tar-Pamlico: Pamlico Plantation, Havens Gardens and the Washington Waterfront.
  • Neuse: Cowpen Landing in Vanceboro, Glenburnie Park in Newborn, Town of Bridgeton Park and Slocum Creek in Havelock
  • Cotton Patch Landing on Blounts Creek

Increased numbers of fecal bacteria in water at regular intervals increase the risk of gastrointestinal diseases and skin infections in pets and humans, according to the press release.

“Last week we were dealing with Tropical Storm Debby, so we didn’t do any testing,” said Clay Barber, Sound Rivers program director. “The heavy rain and stormwater polluted the waterways with bacteria, and this week’s results at some locations still reflect that.”

According to Sound Rivers, the following locations still need to be tested: Maple Cypress in Grifton, Highway 11 boat ramp in Kinston and Spring Garden boat ramp near New Bern, Town Common and Port Terminal in Greenville, Dinah’s Landing in Goose Creek State Park, Bonner’s Point and Plum Point in Bath and Wright’s Creek in Belhaven.

Barber advises that if you have any doubts about the water quality, keep your head above water and protect open wounds from any contact.
