Gowri Kannada (Theatre)

2024

Director: Indrajit Lankesh

Pour:Samarjit Lankesh, Saanya Iyer, Manasi Sampath, Maithreya Sihi, Kahi Chandru

Directed by Indrajit Lankesh, Gowri serves as a launching pad for his son Samarjit Lankesh’s acting career. The film bears all the hallmarks of his signature style. It has no connection with the late Gauri Lankesh, a journalist and sister of Indrajit, who was murdered seven years ago.

The narrative centers on Gowri, also known as Gowrishankar (Samarjit), a boy from a humble village who has a passion for singing despite his hearing impairment. His dreams clash with the expectations of his father, a folk singer who wants him to follow in the family footsteps and sing for alms.

Another important character is Samanta (Saanya Iyer), a young girl who faces many adversities. She sets out to form a music band with physically challenged people. This leads her to Gowri. The rest of the story shows the triumphs and tribulations of this unusual duo.

The narrative is peppered with antagonists, thrilling action sequences and cameos from celebrities like Ricky Kej, Chandan Shetty, Priyanka Upendra, Vasundhara Das and Loose Mada Yogi, which guarantees the audience an entertaining ride.

The poetic dialogues, which cleverly add humor and wit to the story, hold the attention. The director chooses a straightforward and family-friendly approach.

With his impressive dance steps, daring action stunts, nuanced body language and convincing dialogues, Samarjit displays a level of skill and versatility reminiscent of seasoned actors.

An action sequence involving bikes and wheelies bears a striking resemblance to a song from the classic film ‘Premaloka’. Similarly, a song in the film seems to be inspired by the iconic number from the film ‘Jogi’.

Overall, the music doesn’t leave a lasting impression. The camera work, although it captures some stunning locations, is average. One notable inconsistency is the portrayal of the protagonist’s hearing impairment; in several scenes, he somehow manages to hear conversations, which defies any logical explanation.
