Reaction of gymnast Jordan Chiles to the withdrawal of the Olympic bronze medal

Jordan Chiles has commented on the controversial decision to strip her of the Olympic bronze medal she won in Paris.

The International Olympic Committee announced the decision on Sunday, ruling that an appeal awarding the American gymnast third place in the floor exercise was filed four seconds after the one-minute time limit expired.

Chiles, who finished last on the floor, received a score of 13.666, good enough for fifth place. Her coach, Cecile Landi, immediately appealed to the judges because her difficulty rating was too low.

She won the challenge and increased Chiles’ score to 13.766, which was enough to jump to third place in the rankings.

The Romanian Gymnastics Federation lodged a protest with the International Gymnastics Federation and the Court of Arbitration for Sport because the decision resulted in a visibly upset Ana Barbosu being pushed off the podium.

This decision was ultimately reversed despite an appeal by USA Gymnastics. Chiles finally released a statement on Thursday about the “devastating news.”

“I am at a loss for words. This decision feels unfair and is a huge blow, not only to me but to everyone who has supported my journey. What adds to the grief is that the unsolicited racially motivated attacks on social media are wrong and extremely hurtful. I have put my heart and soul into this sport and am so proud to represent my culture and my country.”

USA Gymnastics released a video as evidence showing that Landi did indeed file the appeal 47 seconds after the score was announced, but the appeal was still denied.

“I am now facing one of the most difficult moments of my career,” Chiles wrote. “Believe me, I have been through many. I will approach this challenge like others – and do everything I can to ensure justice is done. I believe that at the end of this journey, the people in control will do the right thing.”

Chiles’ teammate Simone Biles won the silver medal on floor. And Chiles left Paris with a gold medal, which she won when she helped the United States win the team all-around.
