Sunland Park police warn of water test scam

SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (KVIA) – A local police department is warning residents of a possible scam that uses a water test to embarrass residents, but actually seeks to obtain a resident’s private information.

Sunland Park police said Friday that a resident responded to a notice that claimed to be from a water company. The resident made an appointment and a man in a safety vest arrived and said he was there to test the water in the house.

Once at the house, the man asked for the resident’s social security number and identity card details.

Police have released a photo of the man and are asking the public for help in identifying him.

Anyone with information should contact Sunland Park dispatch at (575) 526-0795 and ask to speak to a police officer. If you wish to remain anonymous, you should tell dispatch and the officer, police say.

In the statement, the Sunland Park Police Department reminds residents that no government agency, water/utility company, or reputable private business will ask field agents for sensitive and private information such as social security numbers, driver’s licenses, government-issued IDs, or passport information. Anyone asked for such information should contact Sunland Park headquarters at (575) 526-0795 and NOT provide any sensitive or private information to anyone.
