Hoffenheim frightened in DFB Cup against small Würzburger

Three Bundesliga clubs have made it to the second round of the DFB Pokal, but they all needed extra time or a penalty shootout to overcome lower-league opponents on an evening full of near-surprises.

First division club Hoffenheim almost dropped out of the game against third division club Würzburger Kickers.

Hoffenheim fell behind after just eleven minutes, but an own goal eight minutes later forced the game into extra time.

Würzburg took the lead again after a goal in the 100th minute, but Marius Bülter, the former Schalke striker, equalized for Hoffenheim in the 107th minute and took the game to penalties.

Würzburg captain Dominik Meisel was the only player to miss a penalty and Hoffenheim won the penalty shootout 5-3.

Fourth division club Hallescher almost embarrassed last season’s second division champions, St. Pauli.

Hallescher led 2-1 until Adam Dźwigała equalized in the 94th minute. Substitute Lars Ritzka scored the winning goal for the Hamburg club in the 110th minute, securing the 3-2 victory.

Mainz recovered from a 1-0 deficit against third division side Wehen Wiesbaden, but needed goals from captain Jonathan Burkardt and midfielder Nadiem Amiri in extra time to claim a 3-1 victory.

Bayern Munich played its first competitive game under new coach Vincent Kompany and faced third division side Ulm on Friday.
