Caleb on the way to the U20 World Championship

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Student-athlete at the University of Alaska Anchorage Joshua Caleb will take his talent to the world stage when he competes in the U20 World Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru from August 27-31.

Caleb will represent his home country Nigeria in the 400 metres and could be selected for the mixed relay or the men’s 4×400 relay.

“My goals for the U20 World Cup are to make history and make a name for myself and my country,” said Caleb.

Caleb represented Nigeria at the 2023 African U20 Championships in Ndola, Zambia, where he reached the final of the 400.

Caleb rewrote the history books in his freshman year at UAA, setting six school records, winning three GNAC titles and two All-American honors. He was named the GNAC Male Student-Athlete of the Year for all sports and the GNAC Male Freshman of the Year for indoor and outdoor track and field.

“Of course it’s great news for Josh that he got the call,” said the assistant athletics coach Ray Shadow. “For those who don’t know Team Nigeria, they have a strong sprint history, so being asked to run for the U20 team is no small feat. Especially because Josh is still so young. I’m glad Team Nigeria recognizes what we already know in Alaska. Yes, he is fast, but his potential is limitless. I think this is just the first step to bigger goals, with the possibility of a call-up to the senior national team in four years in LA not out of the question.”
