3 Bundesliga clubs narrowly avoid surprises in the DFB Cup

BERLIN — Three Bundesliga clubs made it into the second round of the DFB Pokal on Friday, but they all needed extra time or a penalty shootout to beat lower-league opponents on an evening full of near-surprises.

Bundesliga club Hoffenheim almost got eliminated by third division club Würzburger Kickers.

Hoffenheim fell behind after 11 minutes, but an own goal eight minutes later forced extra time. Würzburg took the lead again in the 100th minute, but Marius Bülter equalized for Hoffenheim in the 107th minute and the game had to be decided on penalties.

Würzburg captain Dominik Meisel was the only player to miss a penalty and Hoffenheim won the penalty shootout 5-3.

Fourth division club Hallescher almost embarrassed last season’s second division champions, St. Pauli.

Hallescher led 2-1 until Adam Dźwigała equalized in the 94th minute. Substitute Lars Ritzka scored the decisive goal for Hamburg in the 110th minute to give them a 3-2 win.

Mainz recovered from a 1-0 deficit against third division side Wehen Wiesbaden and needed extra-time goals from captain Jonathan Burkardt and midfielder Nadiem Amiri to claim a 3-1 victory.

Bayern Munich are playing their first competitive match under new coach Vincent Kompany and will be looking to avoid further problems of this kind when they face third division side Ulm later on Friday.
