Children and police officers celebrated as heroes after dramatic water rescue in Texas

A new video shows police in southeast Texas conducting a dramatic water rescue of a woman whose car was almost completely submerged in a pond.

Jonquetta Winbush’s two children, a 12-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl, managed to escape in West Orange, Texas, in late July when Winbush had an epileptic seizure, Deputy Police Chief Jessie Romero said Wednesday. Winbush then lost consciousness and slammed on the accelerator, causing her vehicle to plunge into the pond.

In the body camera footage of veteran patrol officer Charles Cobb, who was watching traffic nearby, Winbush’s son can be seen frantically approaching the officer.

“She’s having a seizure. She’s drowned,” the boy said to Cobb. “She’s in the water. Help her.”

Cobb put the boy in the back seat of his patrol car and raced to Winbush’s vehicle, which was almost completely submerged. Two workers from a local factory had already gone into the water to get Winbush out, Romero said.

After pulling Winbush from the pond, Cobb performed CPR, according to Romero.

“She was completely unconscious,” Romero said. “He was able to get her pulse back while he had her lying there on the floor and resuscitate her until EMS arrived.”

Winbush’s sister, Bevnisha Holman, said she personally thanked one of the workers, Epifanio Munguia, for helping save her sister’s life.

“I sent him a message and said I wanted to personally thank him for being there for my niece and nephew and ultimately my sister because he really helped save their lives,” Holman told Beaumont television station KBMT.

After three weeks in intensive care, Winbush is now breathing independently, according to Romero.

“She is still in the hospital, but she will make a full recovery,” he said.

According to KOGT, the city of West Orange honored Cobb for his heroic efforts. The media outlet also mentioned that two citizens, Corey Bull and Epifiano Munguia, were honored for their help, while the children were also praised.
