Panthers sign another offensive lineman on Friday

The Carolina Panthers are really making sure they have enough Hog Mollies before their second preseason game of the summer.

As announced on Friday afternoon, the team has signed guard Ike Boettger. The 29-year-old is the fourth offensive lineman the Panthers have signed in the past week, alongside Jack Anderson, Tyler Smith and Mason Brooks.

Boettger is originally from Cedar Falls, but stayed in the area during his college football, playing at the University of Iowa from 2013 to 2017. He started 22 of his 30 games for the Hawkeyes, mostly playing as right tackle.

Boettger then made the leap to the NFL in 2018 as an undrafted free agent with the Buffalo Bills. The 6’6″ and 310lb player, who appeared in 36 professional games, also played for the Kansas City Chiefs, the Indianapolis Colts and most recently the Detroit Lions.

Carolina is currently dealing with a number of injuries on the offensive line, including tackles Yosh Nijman and Badara Traore and center backs Chandler Zavala and Cade Mays. Boettger will likely provide some depth for Saturday night’s friendly against the New York Jets.

To make room for Boettger, the Panthers also waived rookie linebacker Jackson Mitchell.
