Last day celebration at current Romkey Park Pool cancelled

MOORHEAD, Minn. (Valley News Live) – City officials had hoped to celebrate the final day of Romkey Park Pool in Moorhead, but rain two days in a row forced them to change their plans.

Friday, August 16, is the last day the pool was supposed to be open. It was planned to feature free admission, food, bouncy castles and yard games. City officials say the celebration was canceled because of the rain.

Because of the rain, the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone on Thursday was also moved indoors.

Romkey Park was established in 1956 and its main highlight, the Moorhead Municipal Pool, opened its doors in 1958. The pool has provided great summer memories for generations of Moorhead families, but has far exceeded its expected lifespan.

Reimagine Romkey aims to improve outdoor recreation in the neighborhood. By replacing underused facilities, expanding recreation opportunities, and remodeling the Moorhead Municipal Pool, the project is designed to revitalize the park and encourage community engagement.

In addition to remodeling the swimming pool, the city placed great importance on citizens’ suggestions regarding the desired park facilities. After a thorough analysis of the feedback, the most important facilities emerged. The final park concept reflects these preferences and features:

  • Pool with diving board and water slide
  • Zero entry paddling pool
  • Splashpad outside the pool fence, free access and extends the season
  • Common room
  • Skate park
  • Traditional playground
  • Natural playground
  • Food forest and sustainable landscaping
  • Basketball courts
  • Toboggan run
  • Pickleball courts
  • Football field
  • Picnic shelter
  • New hiking trails and walkways
