Could the Mets reunite with a left-hander to add much-needed pitching?

The New York Mets have been a pleasant surprise this season after a rocky start to the 2024 season.

New York was more than 10 games under .500 at one point, but is now just two games out of a wild-card spot in the National League and has plenty of time to catch up in the standings. One thing that could help the Mets at this point would be to sign more experienced bullpen players.

One player who might make sense is left-hander Chasen Shreve. According to Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors, he recently became a free agent after turning down a minor league assignment after being designated for trade by the Colorado Rockies.

“Left-hander Chasen Shreve, recently designated for trade by the Rockies, declined an outright transfer and opted for free agency, according to MLB.com’s transaction log,” Adams said. “He’s back on the open market.

“The 34-year-old Shreve pitched just one inning with the Rockies. He retired all three batters he faced with three grounders. It was just one inning, but that stretch now snaps Shreve’s streak of 11 consecutive seasons of pitching in some form at the major league level. Although he didn’t see much action in the majors this year, Shreve pitched well in Triple-A. He also spent time in the Yankees and Rangers systems, pitching a total of 34 1/3 innings with a 2.62 earned run average, 26.7% strikeout rate, 9.2% walk rate and 41.5% ground ball rate.”

Shreve spent the 2020 and 2022 seasons with the Mets and, with a 3.96 ERA in 368 total appearances, could be a reasonable candidate for a reunion.
