Aaron Ekblad brings the Stanley Cup back to Lakeshore

The Stanley Cup is on its way to the community of Lakeshore.

Aaron Ekblad will win hockey’s top prize on Saturday.

And that includes him showing off his trophy at the Atlas Tube Centre (ATC) from 9:10 to 10:30 a.m. Fans are asked to queue up from 8:00 a.m., when they will have the opportunity to take a photo with Ekblad and the trophy.

The Florida Panthers defeated the Edmonton Oilers in Game 7 in June.

“This is a special opportunity to show the Stanley Cup to everyone who has supported me so much over the years,” the 28-year-old defenseman said in a statement.

Frank Jeney works for the Lakeshore community and calls this an opportunity that is on his “bucket list.”

“I have been watching this trophy since I was a child.”

Although he admits to being “very excited” to see the trophy up close and personal, Jeney says he doesn’t think it’s a good idea to try to lift it over his head.

“I’m the kind of person that if I lift it up or something it might break,” he joked on CBC radio. Windsor Morning Moderator Amy Dodge. “I’ll probably just leave it on the table where it belongs.”

Jeney says that in organizing Saturday’s event, it was important to Ekblad to ensure that as many people as possible got to see Lord Stanley’s face.

“He really wanted to give as many people as possible the opportunity to see us and maybe take a photo with us.”

According to Jeney, the Cup and everyone in the facility will be well secured – there will be plenty of staff and emergency personnel on site, including firefighters, OPP officers and some security.

“The Stanley Cup is managed by a dedicated staff that delivers it to all the team members who have the chance to spend the day with it. So you see a lot of people there.”

Panthers head coach Paul Maurice also has family and ties to Windsor-Essex. However, it is currently unclear if the former Windsor Spitfires player and coach will get his hands on the trophy while in Windsor-Essex.
