How many cup holders in a car are too many cup holders?

Can you ever have too many cup holders in a car?

In terms of performance and handling, there is hardly anything better than the classic Porsche 911. The German manufacturer’s two-door coupe is arguably the flagship of the sports car giant.

However, if you want to put down your morning latte, you don’t have many options.

One driver got fed up with the 911’s flimsy (and oddly positioned) standard cupholders. He decided to have a mechanic install an optional center console holder. But little did he know that the technician performing the installation would also be getting a few sideways glances.

Online Volkswagen enthusiast and Hawaii-based TikToker Jimmy (@reallyjimmy_) gave his customer a little pushback in a video showing the installation, which he posted to his account on June 20.

The video was recently viewed over 685,200 times on TikTok.

The video is titled “Not enough cup holders, he says.” In it, Jimmy unboxes the new holder and shows it to the camera. The text on the screen reads: “Customer requests cup holders be installed.”

Although Jimmy doesn’t speak in the video, he shows viewers how the new cup holder will fit into the Porsche’s center console, but then pans to the other side of the vehicle.

Not only does it reveal the two standard cupholders, which unlike most vehicles are hidden in a compartment above the glove box on the passenger side, it also reveals another third-party cup/bottle holder that has been added to the center console.

With the new holder, there would be four holders in the vehicle. Jimmy means that this number is a tough choice.

Viewers disagree

However, his viewers do not seem to agree with this implication.

Chris (@giant_robot) wrote: “I wouldn’t want to reach to the passenger side to get my drink either.”

Jimmy admitted, “True. But I still don’t want to risk spilling my drink on electronics that have been sold for thousands of dollars.”

Another viewer commented: “To be honest, you can’t rely on those pop-out parts (which come standard) to hold anything securely.”

Many viewers simply felt that Jimmy should have installed the new holder without batting an eyelid.

“Just install the cup holder bro,” wrote one. Another added, “Just install my cup holder bro.”

And indubitable_dooby (@indubitable_) jokingly wrote: “Just put my fries in the bag bro.”

Why doesn’t the Porsche 911 have good cup holders?

Writing for Business Insider, Matthew DeBoard says the Porsche 911’s cupholders are “almost useless,” but also says, “If you’re worried about how ‘modern’ your cupholders are, you might not be the best customer for a Porsche 911. Everything in the car is designed to keep weight down and make sure you focus on what there’s no substitute for: driving! Gosh, I love this car.”

The Daily Dot has asked Porsche for a comment via email.

Killian Fritz’s (@killianfritz) comment perhaps sums it up best: “Considering that all three of these are for the passenger, yes, I would like one installed for me too!”

The Daily Dot reached out to Jimmy for further comment via TikTok Messenger and commentary.
